How to fix wrapped cutting board?
Wrapped cutting board is an issue that many people face, especially if the board is wooden. The curvature is usually due to uneven evaporation of water from the wood. When the board sits on the countertop, moisture evaporates faster from the top, exposed side, while the surface in contact with the countertop remains wetter. As a result, the wood begins to deform. In this post we give useful advice how to fix wrapped cutting board.
Thinner boards warp more
One of the key factors affecting the deformation of cutting boards is their thickness relative to the surface area. The thinner the board and the larger its surface area, the more susceptible it is to warping. Therefore, thin boards can bend faster and more than thicker ones.
How to repair a wrapped cutting board?
If your board has become bent, there are several methods you can use to restore it to its original shape:
- Turn the board inside out
Simply turn the board convex side down and leave it on a flat surface for 24 hours. During this time, the wood will begin to stabilize. To speed up the process, you can weight the board with heavy objects, such as books or pots. - Pressing with weight
If turning the board doesn’t work, try laying a damp cloth on it and then pressing it down with something heavy for a few hours. The moisture and weight will help repair the bend evenly.
Note: Natural processes in wood
NOTE: Remember that returning the board to its natural position does not guarantee that it will remain perfectly flat forever. Wood will always react to moisture, so the processes of drying and water absorption will occur during use. This is a natural characteristic of wooden products.
